Lingering Post-Concussion Symptoms: Could Your Neck Be Part of the Picture?

The accident is over. Your scans may have come back normal. You may have been told to rest and give it time—but weeks or even months later, you still do not feel like yourself.

Perhaps you are experiencing headaches, dizziness, brain fog, neck pain, fatigue, trouble concentrating, or sensitivity to light and sound. Maybe you have returned to work or your usual routine, but everything feels harder than it did before.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Lingering post-concussion symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, brain fog, neck pain, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Most people improve after a concussion, but for some, symptoms can continue well beyond the expected recovery period. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, concussion symptoms can vary from person to person and may change throughout recovery.

When symptoms linger, it may be time to look beyond the brain and consider whether the neck was also affected during the injury.

Common Lingering Post-Concussion Symptoms

Persistent symptoms may include:

  • Headaches or pressure in the head

  • Dizziness or balance problems

  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

  • Neck pain and stiffness

  • Fatigue

  • Sensitivity to light or noise

  • Blurred vision

  • Nausea

  • Irritability or changes in mood

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Feeling “off” or unlike yourself

These symptoms can interfere with work, exercise, driving, school, and everyday activities. They can also be incredibly frustrating—especially when medical testing does not reveal a clear explanation.

A Concussion Can Affect More Than the Brain

A concussion is a form of mild traumatic brain injury and should always be evaluated and managed by an appropriate medical professional. However, the same force that moves the brain inside the skull can also affect the muscles, joints, and supporting structures of the neck. This can happen during a car accident, sports injury, fall, or any sudden blow to the head or body.

The upper cervical spine, the area where the head and neck meet contain joints, muscles, nerves, and sensory receptors involved in head position, balance, and movement. When this area is not functioning properly, it may contribute to symptoms that overlap with common post-concussion complaints, including headaches, dizziness, neck pain, and difficulty focusing.

Research has also explored how cervical spine dysfunction may contribute to persistent symptoms following a concussion, particularly when headaches, dizziness, and neck pain continue. This does not mean that every post-concussion symptom comes from the neck. It does mean the neck may be an important part of the overall picture and should not automatically be overlooked.

What If Your Tests Were Normal?

Many people with lingering symptoms are confused when their X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs do not show a clear problem.

Those tests are important for ruling out fractures, bleeding, and other serious conditions. However, they do not necessarily evaluate how well the joints of the upper neck are moving or whether the head and upper cervical spine are properly aligned.

Normal test results do not mean your symptoms are imaginary. They may simply mean that a different type of evaluation is needed.

How Atlas Orthogonal Care Is Different

Atlas Orthogonal is a specialized form of upper cervical chiropractic care focused on the alignment of the atlas, the top vertebra in the neck.

At AO Buffalo, we begin with a consultation, examination, and specialized digital upper cervical X-rays when clinically appropriate. These images allow Dr. Muto to evaluate each patient individually and calculate a precise correction based on their unique anatomy.

The Atlas Orthogonal correction is performed using a gentle, percussion-style instrument. There is no forceful twisting, cracking, or popping of the neck.

Our goal is not to treat the concussion itself. Instead, we evaluate whether the upper cervical spine may have been affected during the injury and whether it could be contributing to ongoing neck-related symptoms. Atlas Orthogonal care may be considered as one part of a broader recovery plan that can also include medical care, vestibular therapy, vision therapy, physical therapy, and other appropriate services.

Could Your Upper Neck Be Part of the Problem?

An upper cervical evaluation may be worth considering if:

  • Your symptoms began after a concussion, collision, fall, or sports injury.

  • Headaches, dizziness, or neck discomfort continue despite rest.

  • Your testing has been normal, but you still do not feel right.

  • You have tried several approaches without lasting improvement.

  • You want a gentle option that does not involve twisting or cracking your neck.

Every patient and every injury is different. An evaluation helps determine whether Atlas Orthogonal care is appropriate for your particular situation.

Do Not Ignore New or Worsening Symptoms

If you recently experienced a head injury or have new or worsening neurological symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. Emergency symptoms can include a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, increasing confusion, unusual behavior, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, unequal pupils, or difficulty waking.

Upper cervical chiropractic care is not a substitute for emergency or medical evaluation following a head injury.
